A Study in Winter Light
Featuring photos from my recent trip to Torino!
Welcome to a post for all subscribers, a photo essay with thoughts from yet another trip to Italia. Next week, paid subscribers will receive a recipe for monster cookies. As always, thank you for being here! Learn more about my work here and browse past editions here.
Over the last few weeks, I have been all over the place. I mean that literally, by the way, as well as metaphorically. This fall and early winter has been full of wonderful, exciting busyness and trips, and I am feeling grateful and tired all at once. I feel like I have been talking a lot about big, exciting things that are finally out in the world (cookbooks! retreat announcements! zines!), and while all of that is incredible, I am looking forward to some quiet reflection.
One of the things I’m excited to reflect upon is my recent trip to Italy. My husband and I run a storytelling studio, and research for an upcoming project took us to Torino, where we spent 10 wonderful days meeting people and drinking more coffee than I actually thought was possible.
Typically during trips to Italy, I fill up camera card after camera card with thousands of photos and edit them as quickly as I can when we get back. On this trip, I got so caught up in talking to people and hearing their stories that I nearly forgot I had a camera. My distraction and limited daylight made for a very different editing project, and I’ve been sort of enjoying working with this limited library of darker, moodier photos this time around.

The light during the winter was different, as expected. The sun popped out and made for some lovely warm tones, but even behind the warmth, there’s a coolness that fights through. The blues and grays from the sky were so beautiful, and it really created a different kind of light. Lots of these photos are shot with ambient light as opposed to direct sunlight, and I think it really fits the feel of Northern Italy in the winter. Hope you enjoy—more to come!
